An ecological community at the foot of the mountain. Greenery surrounds the homes, separating the inhabitants from the rest of the gray city. But when the authorities decide to install social housing, the community feels threatened, fears for its existence and the loss of its ecological and progressive lifestyle. In desperation, they hire two German “experts” who travel around the Third World intervening in social crises. The experts will do everything they can to reinvent the community’s image and shout to the world: Social housing, yes! But not in my backyard!
NIMBY, or not in my backyard, is the concept behind this co-production of the Zoo Collective and the Heidelberg Theater (Germany), and refers to communities that oppose the installation of projects with a high environmental impact in their immediate surroundings, but do not necessarily reject the activity itself.
The play is inspired by the dispute that existed in 2003 between the Ecological Community and the residents of the Toma de Peñalolén, to whom the government was going to give social housing on land within the community. NIMBY (we are the good guys) fictionalizes this conflict to reflect on the values and limits of the community.
